What is a Light-Sport Aircraft?

The FAA has defined light-sport aircraft as simple-to-operate, easy-to-fly aircraft that, since initial certification, has continued to meet the following performance definition:

In addition to fixed-wing airplanes, the definition of a light-sport aircraft also includes powered parachutes, weight-shift control aircraft (i.e., Trikes), balloons, airships, gliders and gyroplanes. For more information on the definition of a light-sport aircraft, click here.

Any aircraft that meets the definition of a light-sport aircraft as called out in FAR Part 1.1 is eligible to be operated by a sport pilot. These aircraft can be certificated in any category, such as standard, experimental amateur-built, experimental exhibition, experimental light-sport aircraft (E-LSA), or special light-sport aircraft (S-LSA).

What is a Special Light-Sport Aircraft?

A special light-sport aircraft (S-LSA) is a factory-built, ready-to-fly aircraft designed and construction accordance with the ASTM consensus standards for light-sport aircraft (LSA).

In addition to recreational flying, S-LSA can be rented and used for flight instruction. They must be maintained and inspected by a certification repairman with an LSA maintenance rating, a standard FAA aircraft maintenance rating, known as an airframe and powerplant (A&P) rating, or at an FAA authorized repair station. Pilots can perform preventive maintenance on S-LSA.

Private owners of these aircraft may change an S-LSA’s airworthiness certificate to experimental light-sport aircraft status (E-LSA). This allows the owner to perform the annual condition inspection after attending a 16-hour course to obtain a light-sport aircraft repairman’s certificate with an inspection rating. However, once an S-LSA is certificated as an E-LSA, it can no longer be used for rental or commercial flight training.

A foreign aircraft sold in the United States as S-LSA must be eligible to operate in its country of origin, which must have a bi-lateral agreement with the FAA. Reference SportPilot.org

Who Is Jp Krucker?


J.P. Krucker began production of hang glider trikes in 2000 using Rotax 503 engines

and 21 m2 Gibbo Butterfly wings. The first trikes were land only, but we immediately began development of floats. We first tried many sets of conventional 'airplane' floats but found they did not work well for trikes. Through experimentation and on-the-water testing, we developed the stepped concept that works so well for trike flying. The first amphibious units were produced in 2001. We called those the Krucker Calypso.

The original float design has proven itself over time and no significant changes have been made to the floats. We made many gradual improvements to the Calypso landing gear retraction and extension system, seating, instrumentation, and overall look. In 2004 we released the Cygnet, incorporating all the refinements that had been made to the Calypso, and using the Rotax 582 for power.

My name is Jeff Bell. I live in Navarre Florida and have been flying since 1980. I received my
pilots license in 1989 and continued my education in receiving my IFR rating and CFI rating.
I began flying ultralights in 1996. I fell in love with my first ultralight when I was 12 years old.
A neighbor had one and took me for a flight. I was hooked.
I bought my first ultralight in 1996. Sold it and bought a Flying Inflatable Boat. Since we live
at the beach, it made sense to fly off the water.
I met Micheal Percy in 2007. He has been a true friend and partner. We have joined forces

Description:

Krucker floats are made from 5052 aluminum, the same used for pontoon boats, weighing only 93 lbs mounted. Using the same material that boats are made of, with all welded seams, NO rivets so t don't leak. With three chambers per float they combine to over 1800 lbs of floatation. The floats are coated with a plastic bottom to allow for beaching of the aircraft, without damaging the float. If you don't have access to a beach, don't worry. You can launch from any boat acess point, grassy lake access, or intercostal access.
